Video Game Review: League of Legends a hit

Like most people in their 20's I was born with a video game controller in my hands.  From Atari to PS3 I’ve sampled a little bit of every system along with PC games.  In these coming articles I’ll give you a brief overview of the games I’ve been playing to help you decide if it’s worth your time and money.

Today I’ll be reviewing League of Legends a MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) style game for the PC.  In the game you control a single character.  You also are joined by 2-4 other players depending on the map you choose.  As the game goes on you buy items, take down towers, oh and destroy the enemy team in epic fights.  I never enjoyed the MOBA style format until I downloaded this crack addiction of a game.  I’ll go over the Pro’s and Con’s to help you decide if it’s right for you.

Starting off with the pros, if you’re sick of the grind that is WoW (World of Warcraft) and any other MMORPG then this could be perfect for you.  Games range from 20 minutes to an hour, not your whole senior year of high school (like this guy with WoW).   The other thing that’s really cool about this MOBA compared to the others, is that you have a masteries and rune page section that can help you do extra damage, increase attack speed, improve defense…you know all that cool stuff.  Without a doubt the 100% best thing about LoL (League of Legends) is that it’s FREE!  You can spend money in the game to earn points to unlock new characters or different skins to make them look different in the game but that is optional.

Now, for the cons…as this was my first MOBA I didn’t have many issues with the game.   Talking to friends that played other MOBA’s like DOTA (Defense of the Ancients), or HON (Heroes of Newerth) the only thing I ever heard them complaining about was that you can’t deny creeps (killing your own AI minions to deny gold from the other team).  If anything that makes the game easier for newcomers to get a feel for MOBA style.  Another bad thing about the game is that it is addicting.  Several times I find myself saying I’ll play one more game and go to bed, yeah just one more…only to look up at my clock and see it’s 5 in the morning.  The worst thing about this game may be the community of players.  People sometimes expect you to know exactly what to do immediately and if you don’t they are more than happy to give you less than friendly encouragement about the job you’re doing.  The solution to this is easy, the game offers a tutorial and practice games so you can adapt and be ready for the real thing.

Overall if you’re looking for a new game this is worth a try.  It’s free so you won’t be wasting your money and it’s a lot of fun.  If you’ve played MOBA style games in the past then you’ll pick this up no problem.  For those less experienced players, take your time and practice before going straight into the game.
