UNDATED (WKZO) -- As we told you they might just before the big travel weekend, gas prices have spiked around Southwest Michigan. Prices have jumped 15 to 20-cents into the $3.80 range again. The price of crude oil continues to fall and now stands at its lowest level since November, when our statewide average gas price was under three-dollars-20-cents a gallon.
But gas prices have not followed them all the way down. GasBuddy.com analyst Patrick DeHaan says there is little connection between the price of oil and the price of gasoline right now. DeHaan says gasoline inventories have fallen for 15 straight weeks, which could be contributing to the price jump. The reason he says we can't make a direct comparison to November is we are using a different gasoline formulation right now for cleaner burning due to the summertime.
It should be noted prices are right around where they were a year ago, and the predictions of four-25 to four-50 per gallon for Memorial Day are not going to happen.
