DEARBORN (WKZO) -- More people will be going shorter distances this Memorial day, at least if sampling done by AAA is accurate. Despite the fact that gas prices are down. They are saying that 38.4-million Americans and 1.1-million Michiganders will travel 50-miles or more during the holiday weekend to take advantage of the first three day weekend of the summer season.
The Auto Club says gas prices may be down around 25-cents from last year, but pump prices aren’t cheap and they peaked earlier this season, putting a greater strain on budgets.
Nancy Cain with Michigan AAA says the price of hotel rooms has gone up and so have other travel costs.
She says about 6% will travel by air and 3% will take the bus or train. By far and away, the vast majority of people will be staying home.
