PORTAGE (WKZO) -- They are laying down the carpeting and installing the seats and hanging the speakers as Kalamazoo’s first I-Max Theatre is set to open next week. Combine the bigger than normal curved screen with the precision sound system and throw in 3-D, and they say you aren’t watching the movie, you are in the movie.
Manager Tim Hiler at Celebration Cinema in Portage says some drive miles and miles to see films in the IMAX format. Their first feature will be “Men In Black-3" in 3D and the first shows will be a week from Friday.
The theatre chain had to get special city permits to raise the roof to make room for the extra large screen. The 2.5-million dollar project is wrapping up.
Hiler says to avoid long waits, they sell reserved seats, like concerts or broadway shows. That way everyone knows where they are sitting, and everyone has a seat reserved.
