PINE GROVE TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- A Hart, Michigan man is sitting in the Van Buren County Jail after deputies say he was involved in a crash that caused injuries and then left the scene on M-40 in Pine Grove Township. Witnesses say the pick-up was escorting a large semi-truck, and easy to identify because it was carrying a “wide-load” warning. They say it struck a Chevy HHR broadside about 2:45 Thursday afternoon.
The Chevy is owned by 65-year-old Larry Rogers of Bloomingdale. Rogers and his passenger, 63-year-old Brenda Harris both suffered multiple injuries when the Chevy rolled over. They were both taken to Lakeview Hospital for treatment.
Despite the damage to his pick-up, deputies say the suspect driver left the scene and proceeded with his escort. Van Buren County Deputies responding to the crash were told the truck left, and stopped the 31-year-old driver before he got too far away.
He denied being involved in a crash despite the damage to his vehicle, and despite an eye-witness identifying his pick-up truck. He is being held for failing to stop and identify himself at the scene of an injury accident and may be formally charged Friday.
