MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - The Milwaukee Brewers said Monday afternoon that shortstop Alex Gonzalez will be out for the season with a torn ACL ligament in his right knee.
He suffered the injury in Saturday’s loss at San Francisco.
Assistant general manager Gord Ash said it’s not known yet who will perform surgery – but he’ll have it as soon as something’s lined up.
The Brewers signed the 35-year-old Gonzalez as a free agent from Atlanta. The team expected him to be a defensive upgrade from a year ago, when Yuniesky Betancourt struggled in the field.
Gonzalez had a vesting option in his contract that would have guaranteed him $4 million next year, if he had 525 plate appearances this year. But now, that’s out.
The Brewers will host Cincinnati Monday night.
