ST PAUL, MN (WKZO) -- Winning the CCHA tournament was a goal of the Western Michigan hockey team at the beginning of the season. Putting that in the books last week was a huge accomplishment for the Broncos, bringing the Mason Cup to Kalamazoo for the first time since 1986.Tomorrow, they will play in the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. Their opponent, the 7-time NCAA champion North Dakota Fighting Sioux in the West Region from St. Paul Minnesota.
Much like in the CCHA tournament, showing up isn’t considered a success in the eyes of this year’s team.
“We're excited to be here, but we're not just here as participants. We've got a very tough game tomorrow against the University of North Dakota and we're looking forward to that,” WMU head coach Andy Murray said during the team’s press conference Friday.
While a large Michigan crowd is not expected on site in Minnesota, Western Michigan will benefit from a large contingent of local fans that absolutely despise North Dakota.
A win Saturday will set up a matchup with the winner of Boston U/Minnesota in the other regional final.
Game time Saturday is 1:30 pm. Robin Hook has the play by play call starting at 1 pm on 96.5 FM or online on WKZO.com
