Scott is handing out 200 cameras and asking amateur filmmakers to record footage for Japan In A Day, about citizens' lives one year after the 11 March (11) disaster.

The best clips uploaded to YouTube.com will be used in the final project, which the Gladiator director is dedicating to the nearly 20,000 people killed in the tragedy.

Fuji Television bosses, who are sponsoring the time capsule movie, will donate profits to victims in Japan.

Scott previously produced the YouTube user-generated movie Life In A Day with director Kevin Macdonald, which featured amateur footage of life around the world on 24 July, 2010.
