MARCELLUS (WKZO) A one-year-old boy from Cass County almost drowned Sunday, but his mother says the family's black Labrador came to his rescue. 30-year-old Patricia Drauch was with her son Stanley at their home on Maple Street, headed for the garage when the boy vanished from her side.
She found the toddler in a back yard in-ground swimming pool. The boy was unconscious and being held above water by Bear, the family dog, who had jumped into the pool after him, and kept his head above water.
Unable to get cell service and dial 9-1-1, she jumped in the car headed for the nearest fire station with the boy's lips turning purple when the child threw up in the car and began breathing again.
Stanley has made a full recovery since and the family is calling the dog a hero. Black Labradors were originally used to work in the water with fishermen. Bear may have been doing what comes naturally.
The Department of Human Services has been asked to follow up.
