DETROIT (1660 THE FAN) – Rick Porcello pitched seven innings, but the Tiger bats couldn’t solve Jake Westbrook. Detroit fell to the Cardinals in the second of three games 3-1.
Porcello was touched for 10 hits, but only gave up a pair of runs to put the Tigers in position for a win. He struck out two and walked a batter. Bryan Vilarreal gave up the final run in relief, and Duane Below finished the game surrendering a pair of hits.
A pitcher’s duel went into the third inning when Gerald Laird scored on an Austin Jackson double to right, which proved to be the only run for Detroit.
Yadier Molina grounded into a double play in the sixth, but it was worth the trouble. He scored Matt Holliday to tie the score. Following a walk and a balk in the eighth, Molina reached first on an error by Jhonny Peralta, scoring Carlos Beltran for the go-ahead run.
Jake Westbrook went the distance, striking out five and surrendered five hits and a run.
Detroit still has a chance to take the series tomorrow afternoon. Jacob Turner will see his first big league action of 2012. First pitch on AM 590 WKZO is 1:05 pm
