OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- A shoplifting suspect could face multiple counts after he crashed into a Kalamazoo County cruiser while escaping Saturday.
It began when his friend drove him to the On Target gun shop and the suspect went next door to Menards, where he was spotted shoplifting. He fled back to On Target, stole his friends’ vehicle and fled.
A county deputy spotted him on West Main and gave chase.
The suspect turned on N. 7th, which is a dead end, and when he got to the end he doubled back, driving straight at the oncoming cruiser.
What he didn’t know is Deputy Pete Vandeweerd had stopped and was stepping out of the police cruiser. He go out of the way in time, and was there to arrest the suspect, who slammed into the cruiser head on and both cars spun off the roadway.
Neither were hurt. He was lodged at The Kalamazoo County Jail.
The suspect was already being sought for a previous retail fraud, and will now face a long list of much more serious charges.
