LAWTON (WKZO) -- A man described as a felony suspect was killed in a running gun battle with a Lawton police officer early Wednesday morning.

It apparently it began about 3AM when the officer pulled a car over in the 600-block of S. Main for defective equipment.  There were four people in the vehicle at the time.

Michigan State Police Lt. Chuck Christensen said the driver jumped out with a handgun and an assault rifle and began shooting at the officer as he fled.  The officer, apparently outgunned, managed to return fire, hit the suspect in the chest and kill him.

State police are investigating, questioning the others in the car and doing a background check on the suspect. No names have been released.
