UNDATED, (WKZO) - A sea cruise turned into a nightmare for a Michigan couple vacationing on the Costa Concordia cruise ship, and to hear their account, it may be a miracle that many more did not die.
They are back home safely from the wreck off the Italian coast. Steve and Kathy Ledtke of Fort Gratiot escaped in lifeboats after the craft hit rocks and began to sink just more than three hours into last Friday's voyage. Steve Ledtke says there was panic and confusion from passengers and crew throughout the ordeal. Kathy Ledtke says the escape was a scramble for available lifeboats.
When they made it to shore, Ledtke was disgusted to see more crew members than passengers. The death toll has risen to 11 with two dozen still missing. The liner's captain is under arrest for abandoning ship.
