MUNCIE, IN (WKZO) – Entering the season WMU and Ball State were picked to finish 1st and 2nd in the MAC West respectively. On Saturday afternoon, Ball State showed why they should have been picked to finish first.
Jarrod Jones scored 20 points to lead the Cardinals as they improved to 7-0 at home, with a 78-69 convincing victory over the Broncos.
Flenard Whitfield returned to the lineup after missing almost a month with a sprained ankle. The senior big man finished with 6 points in 12 minutes off the bench.
Ball State scored the first basket of the game and never trailed during the contest, and led by as much as 16 in the second half. Western cut the lead to 6 with 3:48 left in the game, but Ball State never allowed the Broncos to get any closer.
Demetrius Ward topped the scoring charts for the Broncos finishing with 16 points on 4-17 shooting. He went 7-8 from the free throw line and also had 7 assists and 6 rebounds.
Matt Stainbrook had 14 points in only 22 minutes of action.
GAME NOTES: With the loss the Broncos are now 6-9 on the season and 0-1 in MAC play…The Cardinals outshot the Broncos 45.5% to 40%...Mike Douglas had 8 points.
