WASHINGTON (WKZO) -- The massive oil spill in Calhoun County in July of 2010 has now resulted in tougher pipeline regulations that might prevent a repeat of such environmental disasters in the future. The measure, co-sponsored by Michigan congressmen Fred Upton and John Dingell, has now been signed by President Obama.
The package of bills requires one-hour notification of incidents, automatic shutoff valves on new lines, more rigorous leak detection standards, and federal review of pipelines buried under waterways, among other things. The delay in discovery and notification were all issues that made the situation along Talmadge Creek and the Kalamazoo River worse.
