NILES (WKZO) -- The names have been released in the fatal police shooting of a burglary suspect near Niles.  Berrien County officials says Deputy Trent Babcock was forced to shoot and kill ex-con William Barker Monday night.

According to police, Baker was wanted in some home invasions, and he was spotted by the Sheriff's deputy on Monday afternoon in Niles, when he  recognized the suspect's car.  Baker realized he was being followed and  tried to lose the deputy by driving south of the state line into Saint Joseph County, Indiana.  However, Deputy Babcock followed, and a short foot chase ensued.  Police say that there was a struggle, with the suspect attacking the deputy with a knife and that's when he was shot. Baker died some hours later at a South Bend hospital.  The Deputy’s hand was injured but he should recover.
