WAYNE TOWNSHIP (WKZO) -- The Cass County Sheriff’s department is investigating a head-on collision that sent 6 people to area hospitals Saturday afternoon .
Deputies say 49-year-old Roger Kirksey of Niles was southbound on M-51 when he told deputies he believes he fell asleep at the wheel and wandered over the centerline, striking another car head on just before 3pm Saturday.
Deputies say the force of the impact sent Kirksey’s vehicle into a roll, ejecting 36-year-old passenger Donna McAbee. Four others were also injured. Deputies say that everyone was buckled up and air bags deployed, preventing any life-threatening injuries, but the force of the impact made it difficult to extricate the two drivers.
Tests will be conducted and a decision made later on citations or charges, but they say it doesn’t appear alcohol was involved.
