DETROIT (WKZO) – Returning to the Great Lakes Invitational for the first time in 26 years, the Bronco hockey team made history last night winning the tournament’s first ever shootout over the Michigan State Spartans, and punching their ticket to tonight’s final against Michigan Tech. The Huskies shutout Michigan in the second semifinal 4-0.
It’s been 22 years since the Broncos and Huskies last faced each other. The teams skated to a 4-4 tie, and Western Michigan earned a 4-2 victory the next night on December 14-15 1990. MTU won the last match up in the Great Lakes Invitational semifinals back in 1977 by a 6-2 final.
