UNDATED (WKZO) -- It was a bloody year in the two major metropolitan areas to the east and west of Kalamazoo.
Detroit hasn’t seen this high a murder rate in two decades with over 375 reported to date. That number has gradually risen since 2008. Chicago is expected to spike at somewhere over 500, for only the second time in its history.
The homicide rate is based on number of homicides per 100-thousand residents. Currently that number is roughly 53 per 100-thousand residents In Detroit. That would be the highest rate since 1994 when there were 54 homicides per 100-thousand residents in the Motor City.
Constrast that with Grand Rapids which has had just 17 murders this year, or Kalamazoo, which has had a spike of its own with 10 killings.
Based on population, that’s only a fraction of the rate of Detroit or Chicago.
