KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- Kalamazoo City Commissioners held a public hearing for their 2003, budget and got complaints from several citizens about their proposal to add a 1% handling fee to next year’s tax bills.
Commissioner David Anderson says Kalamazoo is the last taxing unit in the county not to charge the 1% fee. Everyone else already does it.
Anderson and Mayor Bobby Hopewell says the $350-thousand dollars it will bring in won’t begin to address their long term funding problems, and they say citizens would do well to begin thinking how the city is going to resolve what could be a looming crisis.
They plan to give final approval to the budget on January 7th, and the 1% fee also has its critics on the commission. .
