Broncos win 6th straight game

by

ANN ARBOR (WKZO) -- The Broncos handled the Wolverines tonight, taking the Friday night matchup 4-1.

The first period was filled with eight penalties, testing each teams powerplay.  The Broncos struck first at 12:43 as Ben Warda scored his first goal of the season just as a Wolverine penalty expired.  Western Michigan increased their lead from a Luke Witkowski powerplay goal late in the first at 19:26 to put WMU up 2-0 going into the second period.  The goal was also the first of the year for Witkowski.

WMU struck quickly in the second period as Michigan had a bad line change resulting in a 3 on 1 fast break for the Broncos.  Justin Kovacs was able to beat UOM goaltender Steve Rancine at 5:36 also for his first goal of the season, extending the WMU lead to 3-0.   Late in the second Michigan was finally able to answer back from Phil Di Giuseppe at 13:49 to get the Wolverines back into the game.

In the third period Western Michigan goaltender Frank Slubowski made several great saves keeping the Wolverines at bay.  He finished the night making 23 saves on 24 shots.  WMU also added an empty net goal with time ticking down from Dane Walters to cap off the 4-1 Broncos victory.

The teams will face off again tomorrow at 7:35 in Ann Arbor.
