PORTAGE (WKZO) -- Portage Public Safety's been awarded a 50-thousand dollar grant by the state of Michigan to implement what they call an operational model of "Data Driven Approaches to Crime and Traffic Safety." The intent is to gather data to analyze effectiveness and efficiencies in deployment of law enforcement resources in "hot spots" by pouring over crime and traffic crash data.
The first hot spot identified so far is the South Westnedge corridor between Milham Avenue and Romence Road. They intend to increase police presence in the area with the goal of reducing both crime and traffic crashes.
Portage Police want everyone to know the increased presence is to make citizen contacts and conduct field interviews, not to increase traffic citations.
