The 1986 classic helped make Cruise a superstar and raked in more $353 million (£220 million) at the box office.

Now bosses at Paramount studio have announced the film has been digitally remastered and will be released in 3D in February (13).

The update was overseen by tragic director Tony Scott, who committed suicide by jumping to his death from a bridge in California in August (12).

A Top Gun sequel has been put on hold following Scott's death out of respect for the filmmaker's legacy.
