NORTON SHORES (WKZO) -- Police in Norton Shores say 51-year-old Charles Byer is in critical condition at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon after he shot himself during a standoff with officers.  He was wanted for probation violations after he missed appointments with a probation officer related to a conviction two years ago for a sex crime.  Byer shot himself in the head Tuesday afternoon after holding police at bay for several hours.
