KALAMAZOO (WKZO) – Kalamazoo used home ice advantage to take Game 1 of the ECHL’s best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinals Friday over the South Carolina Stingrays, 6-4.
The Wings opened the scoring early in the first period on Nick Sirota’s third goal of the postseason. Sirota lit the lamp again later in the period, giving Kalamazoo the lead for good. Four different skaters accounted for Kalamazoo’s scores, including a pair from Sirota and a pair from Elgin Reid. Trent Daavettila and Dustin Cloutier padded to the lead as part of a 4-goal second period for the K-Wings. Former WMU netminder Riley Gill was spectacular between the pipes for Kalamazoo, blocking 31 shots and holding off a late third period run from South Carolina.
The same two teams meet tonight for Game 2 at K-Wings Stadium. Game time is 7:30 pm
