PLAINWELL, MI (WHTC News, Holland) - A plane that officials of Plainwell Municipal Airport said was a regular visitor from the Holland area crashed while attempting to land at that facility this morning, killing the 73-year-old pilot from Holland, who was the only person onboard the aircraft.
The mid-morning incident closed the northbound lanes of US-131 north of M-89 for a time. Eyewitnesses said that William Frank Beswick was attempting to land the 33-year-old experimental Thorp T-18 single-engine plane at the airport in foggy conditions when one of its wings apparently clipped the trailer of a northbound FedEx semi, forcing the craft to crash into flames nearby. There was no injury suffered by the unnamed trucker or anyone else on the ground.
State Police and Allegan County Sheriff's investigators are expected to be augmented by those from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board as the probe into this incident has begun.
