LANSING (WKZO) -- Governor Rick Snyder has signed into law a new measure that prohibits minimum staffing requirements in local municipal charters. The provisions that call for a minimum number of public employees to perform certain government functions are no longer allowed under state law. Recently, local governments haven't been able to afford the provisions and have, in turn, been forced to violate their own charters.
In a release announcing the new measure, Snyder said that doing away with the requirements is meant to give local governments more flexibility in adapting to economic challenges. He added that the measure is meant to help local governments allocate resources in meeting each community's needs.
