Kalamazoo, MI (WKZO)-- Much like the football game earlier this afternoon, this game was not always pretty, but Western Michigan earned the sweep against Northern Michigan with a 3-2 OT victory at Lawson Ice Arena. The game started in favor of the Broncos, outshooting the Wildcats 9-2 in the first period, and they took a 2-0 lead to the locker room. However, the second period was a very different story.
A tenacious Wildcat offense took 9 faceoffs in the second period, and found the back of the net twice on Bronco netminder Frank Slubowski. Heading into the third tied at 2, the Broncos still held the shooting advantage 18-12.
A scoreless third period did not come without excitement as the Broncos fought of two Wildcat power plays, one was a 5 minute major penalty when Luke Witkowski was called for checking from behind at the 13:16 mark in the third. Luke will miss next Friday's game against Michigan. After shutting the door on the Wildcats in the third, the stage was set for overtime.
In the extra session, it only took Bronco captain Ian Slater :28 seconds to end the game, 3-2 the final score. Western finished the game with 29 shots on goal. They take the momentum from this sweep to Ann Arbor next week for a weekend series with the Wolverines. Listen live on November 4th on 96.5 FM WKZO and wkzo.com
