ANN ARBOR, MI (WKZO)- For the third week in a row, the WMU hockey team put themselves in prime position to open a big lead early in the first period. And for the third week in a row, the Broncos had to work hard to earn their sixth victory of the year to stay undefeated.
Last week’s star, Ian Slater, picked up right where he left off scoring at the 11:30 mark in the first period. With nifty goaltending from Nick Pisellini, that is how the first period would end.
Brett Beebe added another goal at the 3:11 mark of the second, expanding the Bronco lead to 2-0. No time to celebrate just yet, the Wolverines were not about to roll over.
Over half way through the final period, Kevin Clare cut the Bronco lead in half; Mac Bennett added the equalizer for the Wolverines just a few minutes later. The second period ended in a 2-2 tie.
After being outshot by the Wolverines 15-5 in the second, the Bronco offense woke up in the third, pelting 12 shots at Michigan goalie Shawn Hunwick. 11 shots were deflected, but with under a minute left, a rebound off of the stick of Dane Walters found the back of the net. The Broncos emerge victorious from Yost Arena 3-2. The win snaps a 13 game home winning streak for the Wolverines. Western Michigan has cracked the top 10 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today polls. These two teams will meet again tomorrow night. Faceoff is set for 7:30 pm on 96.5 FM and wkzo.com.
