DETROIT (WKZO)-- Fresh off just the seventh no-hitter in Tigers history, Justin Verlander takes the mound in the first of their three game series against the Kansas City Royals.
The Tigers (20-18) have been notorious for struggling against the pesky Royals in the past but are currently on a five game winning streak and have been playing solid baseball for over a week and a half now. Detroit has now won eight of its last nine games and has been displaying offense to which it is not typically accustomed to.
Led by Victor Martinez, the Tigers have been averaging 8.4 runs per game in their last five games. Martinez was a major factor in producing those runs stroking three hits in each of his last three games.
The Tigers offense may look slightly different later today as Magglio Ordonez was put on the 15-day disabled list to nurse his tender ankle, which has plagued him since his infamous slide into home last August that officially ended Detroit’s 2010 hopes. Don Kelly will replace him in left field for Tonight's game.
But with Martinez, a revived Austin Jackson and the best hitter in the American League in Miguel Cabrera, the Tigers are not exactly hurting.
