NILES -- A Niles police officer has been stripped of his gun and badge and charged with sexually assaulting a male teenager in the city’s Justice Center on St. Patrick’s Day, while he was on duty.

Police Chief Richard Huff says that 25 year-old officer Ivery Cross, who has been with the department since 2009, is suspended following his arrest by Michigan State Police troopers for first and second degree criminal sexual conduct, and obstruction of justice. Chief Huff says the alleged victim is 19 but isn’t releasing other details.

Cross has been suspended without pay, faces up to life if convicted of the most serious offense, and is due back in court on Thursday for formal arraignment. He is currently free on 25-thousand dollars bond.
