LANSING (WKZO) -- The Michigan State Police have announced a plan to begin "regional policing," a move that they say will cut the number of posts from 62 to 29, but won't necessarily result in a drop in service to state residents.

In fact, it seems to be a consolidation of buildings and resources as there are no trooper layoffs included in the plan.

They say service levels for most of the state will be either unchanged or even enhanced under the new model, which in a release they say is meant to get away from relying on "bricks and mortar" post buildings, instead placing a focus on how they respond to crime trends.

The plan is scheduled to take effect in October. Local posts in Battle Creek and Hastings would be among those closed under the proposal.
