LANSING -- Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation that will require that prison inmates be swabbed for DNA samples sooner rather than later.
They would be sampled when they enter prison, not just before they leave, by force if necessary. It would also require that any current prisoners who haven’t been tested, be swabbed by the end of the year.
Sponsor Tonya Schuitmaker says it will answer a lot of nagging questions.
It may not always lengthen the prison terms of offenders, but it will assure the victims of crime that they are off the street.
Samples go into a national data base and may solve crimes nationwide.
