COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - With a fourth straight day of temperatures over 90 degrees expected today in Branch County, the American Red Cross and the County’s Office of Emergency Management say a cooling center will be open in Coldwater today through Friday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day at the Comfort Inn on Orleans Blvd.

Coldwater Board of Public Utilities Director Paul Beckhusen says he believes the BPU is prepared to handle the heightened power demand created by the heat wave and is optimistic the local area and the rest of the state should be able to avoid any extended brownouts.

And Remember: when it's hot outside, your pets can be in danger. Leigh Lash, with Animal Aid of Southwest Michigan, says that some people may not realize dogs, cats, and other pets can't handle the heat as well as we can, they can’t sweat, basically all they can do is pant.

She says that if you do leave your animal outside, be sure it has shade and lots of water. Lash says even farm animals are not safe in the extreme heat. The excessive heat warning remains in effect for Coldwater and Branch County through 8 a.m. Friday.
