KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A 36-year-old man who approached a group on Fulford Street with a board and a handgun is in the hospital in critical condition after they were taken from him and used against him.

It happened at about 6PM last evening.  The man was beaten on the head by the board, and when he was down, the pistol was fired into the pavement around him. Apparently he was not shot.  The group then fled the area on foot.  Public Safety found the man on the ground and sent him to Bronson with critical head injuries.

Detectives are tracking down leads and identifying suspects, but no arrests have been reported so far.

There are reports that the same crowd attacked the car of a woman who knows the original victim while she, three other women and two children were inside the vehicle a few blocks away, smashing the windshield.
