KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- A 34-year-old portage man who held up the Shell station on Portage Road early Wednesday morning became the focus of a police chase through town after Portage Police spotted his SUV and the man refused to pull over.

They were joined by county deputies and city officers as he crossed into Kalamazoo.

Stop sticks were used to blow out his tires, which got him to stop on E. Main at Wallace, but he put the gun he used in the robbery to his own head and threatened to shoot himself. A joint Kalamazoo/Portage SWAT Team surrounded the scene, and some homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution.

Portage even had time to deploy their armored car.

The stand-off lasted about 2-1/2 hours before he was talked into surrendering.  He is being held on armed robbery and fleeing and eluding charges.
