KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- It's been a difficult month to be a police officer.
At least ten have been shot nationwide in the past two weeks, including 4 in a Detroit police station. Around here, it's been mostly auto crashes.
Kalamazoo Public Safety Chief Jeff Hadley's fender bender on Drake, a smash up on I-94 that hospitalized two officers, the U-turn collision on Kilgore that resulted in a couple of citations are all examples.
Thursday afternoon in Allegan County, a deputy's cruiser was rear-ended on southbound US-131 near the Bradley exit. The deputy was investigating an earlier crash when another vehicle came along and hit his.
The deputy suffered minor injuries. It remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, a part-time Burr Oak police officer has found himself on the wrong side of a jail cell door, after he allegedly went on patrol while intoxicated.
Officials say they suspect that Officer Todd Lewis had not only been drinking but may have been high on something else as well. He refused breathalyzer and blood tests after his arrest. His alleged secret was revealed when he wound up in a ditch after sliding off an ice covered road.
Lewis is charged with driving while intoxicated and being armed and under the influence.
