INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (Reuters) - Indianapolis police say they have arrested a person of interest in the shooting of officer David Moore during a routine traffic stop on Sunday morning.

Police identified the man arrested as Thomas Hardy.

Officer Moore, who joined the force in 2004, remains in a coma at Wishard Memorial Hospital's intensive care unit after being shot in the face and body, and hundreds of officers have flocked to the hospital to show support.

"He is on a ventilator and, actually, the past few hours he has been more stable," said Dr. Gerardo Gomez, chief of trauma at Wishard, told Reuters by phone.

Moore is now on a ventilator and has a neurosurgeon working on him, but doctors will need to wait another 24-28 hours before being able to give a complete assessment of his condition, Gomez said.

Moore's father, former Indianapolis police lieutenant Spencer Moore, said he was hopeful but would be hesitant to say he was optimistic until his son's condition stabilizes.

"He's 10 times the police officer I ever was," he said of his son.

The younger Moore was unable to radio for help after he was shot. A bystander called 911 to report an officer down, bleeding in the street.

Moore's mother had also been on the police force, for 26 years.
