MIAMI (Reuters) - A Miami police officer was killed and another was wounded by gunfire during an arrest attempt on Thursday, police said.

There were unconfirmed reports that a suspect also was killed.

The injured officer was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was undergoing surgery, said Miami-Dade Police Lieutenant Nancy Perez.

Television station WSVN said the injured officer, a woman, was shot in the head. The other officer died at the scene.

"One of our officers has expired and the other one is undergoing surgery," Perez said. "I don't know exactly what happened."

Another law enforcement source said that a suspect had also been killed, and WSVN showed footage of two bodies lying on the ground and covered with cloth.

The shootings occurred during a raid involving several local and federal agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Service.

Marshals spokesman Barry Golden said the officers were trying to serve an arrest warrant for someone he described only as "a violent fugitive" and that there were no suspects at large.

The shooting occurred in an inner city neighborhood where violence is common and two schools in the area were locked down while police tried to sort out what happened.
