WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A Baltimore police force applicant collapsed and died while completing a 1.5-mile fitness run, officials said on Saturday.
The unidentified man, 29, collapsed on Friday during a run that is part of the pre-hire agility test, said Baltimore police spokesman Kevin Brown.
Other applicants participating in the run who were medics and emergency personnel treated the man and he was transported to Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead, Brown said.
There was no indication prior to the fitness test that he would have any trouble, Brown said.
After applicants pass a civil service exam required to join the force, they take the agility test.
In addition to completing the run, applicants must meet minimum physical requirements through a series of sit-up, push-up, flexibility and bench press exercises, according to the police website.
Police have not released the applicant's name.
