TUCSON, Arizona (Reuters) - Police on Thursday were examining a bag containing ammunition that was found near the home of Jared Lee Loughner, the man charged in a shooting that killed six people and wounded 13, including a U.S. Congresswoman.
The black diaper bag, which held an unspecified amount of 9mm ammunition, was found at about 10 a.m. local time in a dry wash by an 18-year-old man walking his dog.
Loughner is accused of using a Glock 9mm semi-automatic pistol in the shooting spree at a campaign event for U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson.
"The bag found is believed to be in the black bag that Randy Loughner described his son carrying the morning of the shooting," Pima County Sheriff's spokesman Jason Ogan said in a written statement.
Ogan said the bag was being sent to the FBI for further analysis.
Loughner, 22, is charged with five federal counts in the shooting, including the attempted assassination of Giffords, who remains in critical condition at a local hospital with a head wound.
Authorities have said that on the morning of the shooting rampage, Randy Loughner saw his son remove a black bag from the family vehicle.
When Randy Loughner confronted his son over the bag, Jared Loughner fled on foot. Randy Loughner attempted to follow Jared in his vehicle, but lost sight of him.
