KALAMAZOO (WKZO) -- When is a sit-down restaurant actually a tavern and not a bar with food? Kalamazoo City Hall wants to know.
Kalamazoo's planning staff hopes to clarify the difference with new ordinance language set to be approved next Tuesday. There are regulations that need to be imposed on taverns that don't need to be imposed on restaurants when it comes to security, hours of operation and activities.
The city's ordinance definitions are vague.
They are both establishments that sell food and drink. The proposed ordinance change would base the definition on the amount of space dedicated to selling drinks.
They considered comparing total sales figures for food and drink, but decided this would be easier to measure.
