OTTAWA COUNTY (WKZO) -- A candlelight vigil was held at Coopersville High School Wednesday evening for a brother and sister who were killed when their compact car slammed into the back of a school bus.
It happened at about 2:30pm Wednesday on 56th Avenue.
Superintendent Ron Veldman arranged for grief counselors to be at the school Thursday. Sgt. Steve Austin with the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said the bus was making a routine stop to let off students, with its red flashing lights activated, when the Subaru hit the back of the bus with enough force to wedge the car under the bus.
The car was driven by 16-year-old Bruce Privacky. His sister, Antonia, 13, died with him in the front seat. Sgt. Austin said the car was traveling at about 55MPH and made no attempt to stop before rear-ending the bus.
The bus had to be lifted off the car by crane in order to reach the bodies.
None of the 21 Coopersville students on board the bus were injured.
