DETROIT (WKZO) -- The Detroit Police Department will end the long tradition of providing free funeral procession escorts.

Chief Ralph Godbee says the practice is more difficult due to the reduction of officers in recent years.   He says they also put a drain on his department.

Godbee indicated off-duty officers may escort funeral processions as part of the Secondary Employment program which was started last year.  Detroit is one of the last major U.S. cities that provided the service for free.
