DEARBORN, MI (WKZO) -- It’s a rust belt problem in more ways than one.
Ford is recalling about a million older pick-up trucks because the gas tanks could fall off. The straps that hold the tanks are corroding away because of the road salts used to melt snow and ice in the winter.
Ford Spokesman Wes Sherwood say the failure of either strap could result in gas tanks dragging on the road and bursting into flames, and that’s not good. He says it could be a major fire hazard.
It effects F-150’s from ‘97 to ‘04, F-250’s from ‘97 through ‘99, and Lincoln Blackwood pickups from ‘02 and ‘03. It’s happened to 8 trucks causing 3 injuries, and the goal is to prevent it from happening again. Dealers will have the fuel tank straps replaced free of charge.
