(Lansing, MI) -- The Michigan Department of Corrections expects to lay off as many as 100 employees because of the planned closures of prisons in Coldwater and Muskegon. Department officials say these layoffs are not related to Governor Rick Snyder's plan to cut the Corrections department's budget by 60 million dollars. The Michigan Corrections Organization, the union that represents the almost eight thousand prison employees, believes the figure of 100 layoffs is unrealistic, although they know there will be some. The executive director of the union says that, if employees are willing to move, there are at least 70 to 80 vacancies at prisons in the Jackson area.
