The Tigers were doubled up by the Indians 6-to-3 last night at Cleveland in the opener of a 3-game series. Detroit starter Armando Galarraga failed to get out of the fifth inning when the Indians scored 5 runs.
The big story for the Tigers was an ankle injury suffered by first baseman Miguel Cabrera. He was hurt in the seventh inning after hitting a single and it appeared he jammed the ankle on the bag when he was returning to first on a throw from the catcher. It’s not known if Cabrera, one of the favorites for the American League Most Valuable Player award, will be able to return to the lineup for Detroit final six games. X-rays showed a sprain and no fracture.
The White Sox lost to the Red Sox 6-to-1 while the Cubs got by San Diego 1-to-0. And the Philadelphia Phillies secured their fourth straight National League East title and wrapped up home field throughout the playoffs with their 8-0 win last night at Washington.
