Will Rhymes' two-run homer in the sixth erased a 5-4 deficit and Alex Avila added a solo shot in the eighth as the Tigers last night topped the Royals, 7-to-5 to open a three-game series at Comerica Park. Rhymes had to wait for his first career homer as the umpiring crew reviewed whether it cleared the wall in right field above the yellow line
Rhymes’ homer came off reigning American League Cy Young award winner Zach Greinke, who took the loss to slip to 9-and-13. Avila paced the offense with three hits and three RBI’s for Detroit, which was coming off a three-game sweep of the White Sox. Brad Thomas got the win in relief and Phil Coke earned his second save.
The fading White Sox lost their seventh in-a-row last night, falling 3-to-0 at Oakland. The defeat dropped Chicago to 11-games behind the Twins, who can clinch their second consecutive Central Division title tonight with a win over Cleveland and a White Sox loss to the A’s.
The Cubs were idle yesterday. They host the Giants tonight at Wrigley Field.
