The Pistons are making news both on and off the court. Last night, Detroit dropped its pre-season opener at Miami as LaBron James and Chris Bosh made their debut for the Heat with the Pistons losing 105-to-89. Injuries were a big part of the night.
Miami’s big three, James, Bosh, and Dwyane Wade were on the floor together for only about three minutes before Wade was forced out of action with a strained right hamstring. And Detroit starting forward Jonas Jerebko went down with an Achilles injury and rookie second round draft pick guard Terrico White suffered a broken foot. Both will be re-examined today.
Ben Gordon led Detroit with 17 points. James and Bosh combined for 38 points for the Heat. Friday, the Pistons host Milwaukee at the Palace.
Meanwhile, various sources are reporting that Red Wings and Tigers owner and pizza king Mike Ilitch has emerged as the front-runner for the purchase of the Pistons and is nearing an agreement to buy the franchise from Karen Davidson, the widow of long time team owner Bill Davidson.
Word is the deal could be completed within the next 30 days. Ilitch would be the only owner of three major franchises. The apparent pending sale also leads to discussion of the possibility of Ilitch backing a new 500-million dollar arena for downtown Detroit that would be home to both the Red Wings and Pistons.
