DETROIT (WKZO) -- A Detroit Police officer, searching for a murder suspect, accidentally shot a seven-year-old girl to death early yesterday morning. Assistant Police Chief Ralph Godbee says the officer had just entered the home, after a flash grenade went off, when he was physically confronted by a 46 year old woman.

In the struggle between them, the officer’s gun went off, hitting the girl. The 2nd grader was pronounced dead at the Emergency Room. Godbee called it a parent’s worst nightmare, “a tragedy of unspeakable magnitude”. Police did manage to take the 34 year old murder suspect into custody for the shooting death of a teenager on Friday. He will be arraigned today.
